This survey of music by the prolific Russian choral composer Pavel Chesnokov – the first full album of his music by an English choir – is rich in spiritual drama and gloriously recorded. This return visit to a fascinating area of repertoire by a pianist, Piers Lane, who clearly loves and excels in it, gets an enthusiastic recommendation from our reviewer Jeremy Nicholas.īruckner’s Motets require a choir on top form – combining tonal beauty and sheer stamina, as reviewer Malcolm Riley puts it – and a conductor of impeccable insight, both of which they receive here. The Choir of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge / David Skinner Schubert Piano Sonatas Nos 4 & 20 Schoenberg Drei KlavierstückeĪ masterly and moving pair of Schubert sonatas from Can Çakmur, with an attractive attention to colour in between comes equally inspiring Schoenberg. The superb pianist Han Chen draws on an equal affinity with Romantic and contemporary repertoire to bring us a survey of Ligeti’s Études which, writes reviewer Jed Distler, stands among the best. The extraordinary control that Steve Reich’s fascinating work requires is matched by exquisite musicality from Colin Currie and colleagues – the result is a sublime and reflective recording. The textural detail from Andrew Manze and the RLPO in this Vaughan Williams album is compelling and beautiful. The Philadelphia Orchestra / Yannick Nézet-Séguin Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra / Lahav Shaniįrom his vision of this magisterial symphony to the orchestral sound world he draws from the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Lahav Shani’s Bruckner 7 is an impressive release indeed.
